Wolf’s Pack

Wolfie: I want my whole pack together.

Me: Well, things happened in other series that mean certain members of your pack can’t live within your territory….

Wolfie: Whatever. I want them all in one place.

Me: I can’t rewrite the past….

Wolfie: [grabbing my keyboard and opening a new word-processing document] Just copy [click] and paste [click]. Now we need the commentary. [Handing the keyboard back] I’ll talk and you type.

Me: [deep breath] I’m ready.

***

Thus began Wolf’s Pack, a super-gigantic box set with all the novels, novellas, and side stories in one place for the Wolf Rampant, Alpha Underground, and Wolf Legacy series. At Wolfie’s request, I’ve even marked the result down from $24.99 to $19.99 for two days starting now to reward you, the members of his virtual pack.

That said, if you’re a long-time reader, even 44% off buying the books individually might not be worth your while. The price is only a good deal if your collection is missing five books or more, or if you really want all of the extras (including historical covers and never-before-seen browbeating commentary by Wolfie).

Plus, if you only read on a kindle, I’m afraid you’re out of luck — Amazon doesn’t give authors a sustainable royalty if we price our books above $9.99. On the other hand, what better time could there be than now to try out one of the other retailers? Kobo has a waterproof ereader (I’m drooling!) and Google’s price for Wolf’s Pack is just a hair cheaper than anywhere else. Personally, I also adore Nook (although their website has been broken all week, so you may have to wait a few days to buy there).

Whichever site you choose, I hope you enjoy the result!

Wolf Legacy now live in audio!

Wolf Legacy

Are you ready for a binge session listening to tales of werewolves, cupcakes, and family lost and found? If so, you’re in luck! The amazing Mapuana Makia has completed the entire Wolf Legacy series, which is now available on all audio retailers (except the ultra-slow Audible and Amazon).

The individual books and box set are also available for free borrowing, either through Overdrive (if your library has a copy — if not, request one!) or through Hoopla. Links below:

Lions, Bears, and Werewolves, Oh My: Video from the 2020 Imaginarium

The Imaginarium was forced to go online due to the pandemic…which means my talk turned into a video I can share with you!

Humans that morph into animals abound in fantasy and romance and can even be found in literary fiction, science fiction, and horror. But which shifters appeal to which readers? From fated mates and found family to power dynamics and inner struggles, dive into the tropes and worldbuilding facets of werewolves and other shifters as they related to a variety of genres.

Although you can’t can’t take part in the interactive portion, you can comment on the facebook post below as you watch. Enjoy!

Last week, I took part in the 2020 Imaginarium. The organizers wisely decided to move the convention online…which means I can share my talk with you!

Moon Blind duology now in audio!

Wolf Dreams audiobook

I’m so excited to be able to share both Wolf Dreams and Moon Dancer with you for a twelve-hour gulp of werewolves, archaeology, adventure, and romance! Whitney Dykhouse blew this reading out of the water, making this my favorite series adaptation yet. So, if nothing else, I highly recommend you take a listen to the sample above.

Like my Moon Marked series, the Moon Blind audio duology is available everywhere (including your local library)…or it will be. There seems to be some major delay going on at ACX (the author side of Audible and Amazon). After waiting a solid month for Wolf Dreams to go live, I gave up on a synchronous release and uploaded both audiobooks to the other retailers for immediate gratification. Bonus: they’re only $7.99 apiece on Apple at the moment, which is dirt cheap!

Happy listening!

7/30 update: Wolf Dreams is now on Amazon and Audible. Moon Dancer might take a while though….

Moon Marked Trilogy available as audio bundle

Moon Marked Trilogy audio

The Moon Marked Trilogy just went live in audio box set form! That means you can nab the whole series for a single Audible credit, or for a relatively low price on any retailer (Nook and Google are cheapest). Finally, this series is library friendly, so you can borrow via Overdrive or Hoopla.

So how about penciling 17 hours out of your busy lockdown schedule and diving into Piper’s amazing read of Mai’s adventure? The world will wait until you’re done to explode.

The universal appeal of shifters: A trope for every genre

Humans that morph into animals abound in stories of fantasy and romance and can even be found in literary fiction, science fiction, and horror. But which shifters appeal to which readers?

I have my own theories, but I thought I’d see how they stack up against real-life responses. To that end, I polled three facebook groups — one focused on werewolves in paranormal romance settings, one focused on urban fantasy in general, and one created just for fans of Patricia Briggs.

Alpha werewolves

As expected, the paranormal-romance readers were most united about their reasons for loving werewolves. 80% of them were looking for one or both of the following:

Mates — You could have guessed this one. Paranormal-romance readers love the idea of the one true mate, the fated mate, and/or the hot alpha mate. They’re not the only ones sucked in by that idea, though. 8% of urban fantasy respondents and 14% of Patricia Briggs’ fans also put mates at the top of their werewolf-book wish list.

Found family — This is one of my favorite things to write about (present in all of my books to some extent, but particularly in my Wolf Rampant series), so I know exactly where readers are coming from. A community of werewolves that comes together to create something larger than the sum of its parts is instantly seductive. Subsets include: pack bonds and lone wolves being drawn into a pack.

Werewolf pack dynamics

In contrast, readers in both the general urban fantasy group and in Patricia Briggs’ fan group rated a different facet of werewolf books most important:

Pack dynamics — We love the way the combination of wolf and animal traits create a complicated world full of drama, ritual, and infighting. In fact, if you add in the element of making human power dynamics more visible (overbearing alphas, sassy underdogs bucking the hierarchy, etc.), 20% of paranormal romance readers put this at the top of their list as well. I’ve found pack dynamics are particularly fun to tease apart when you insert a protagonist into a pack she wasn’t born into, as is the case in my Moon Marked series (and, come to think of it, in Mercy Thompson’s case as well).

Human/wolf duality

On the other hand, urban-fantasy readers were more interested than anyone else in this aspect:

The dual animal/human nature of a werewolf — I’ll let one of my respondents sum this one up since she said it so well: “The internal struggle between wolf/human. I think it is a good description of how complex humans are. We all have a wolf half or darker nature, if you will. And we all struggle to balance those emotions and desires.” I suspect this human/wolf duality that Lori Hughes so ably described (and which I put at the forefront of my Moon Blind series) would appeal to a horror audience in addition to a fantasy audience. If you want your werewolves to be forced to shift at the full moon, I suspect you’re tapping into this deep human conflict.

What’s left to love about werewolves? How about:

The wolves themselves — As Tina Hoefs explained, “I love animals more than people. Less drama and bs.” Other respondents mentioned how much they love wolves specifically. They particularly appreciated the scenes where protagonists ran in lupine form, although several also mentioned other aspects of wolfish behavior (either while two-legged or four-legged). Paranormal-romance readers weren’t strongly interested in this aspect, but about a quarter of urban-fantasy readers and a fifth of Patricia Briggs’ fans listed it as a must-have in werewolf books.

Finally, a much smaller subset of readers noted that their favorite aspect is:

General worldbuilding — Whether that’s werewolf superpowers or shifters interacting with vampires and other beings.

And that’s about it for what most of us love about werewolves. Except…maybe you’re attracted to something entirely different? If so, you’ll have to write an outside-the-box shifter novel and share it with the world!

2019 in review

I saw another author make a post about everything she’d launched this year and promptly decided to steal the idea. So, without further ado, 2019 publications just in case you missed one the first time around!

Aimee Easterling's 2019 releases

New releases:

Wolf Dreams — After spending several months wide, the first book in the Moon Blind duology went into Kindle Unlimited in November.

Moon Dancer — The second book in the Moon Blind duology is also currently in KU.

Thirteenth Werewolf and Other Stories — This wide anthology is full of stories that were originally written as newsletter-only freebies, but the first story is brand new.

Moon Stalked — The first book in a new series. This one launched on all retailers but soon thereafter I pulled it into Kindle Unlimited. It will be wide again at some point, though, so please don’t despair if you missed the official launch window.

Alpha’s Hunt — This will be on 2020’s list officially. But, just in case you want to jumpstart the new decade, book two in the Woelfin Awakening series is up for preorder now on all retailers.

2019 werewolf box sets

Box sets:

Moon Marked Trilogy — I recently bundled up my reader-favorite series, and the resulting box set will be at a special 99-cent price point for one more day. Grab it while it’s cheap!

Wolf Nights — This is a multi-author, free box set. I picked some of my favorite authors to include, so I highly recommend trying it out.

Magic After Dark — I’m afraid you missed this limited-time, multi-author, free box set if you weren’t reading along all year. I’ve linked to its Goodreads page in case you want to check out the included authors. Once again, I chose novels I thought my readers would particularly enjoy.

Aimee Easterling's 2019 audio releases

Audio:

Newly available on all retailers and via your local library: Wolf’s Bane, Shadow Wolf, and Fox Blood. (Well, Fox Blood is currently seeping into retailers. It is 100% definitely on Kobo, though, and should reach the others by the end of the year…I hope.)

Newly available on Amazon, Audible, and Apple: Lone Wolf Dawn, Wolf Landing, the Alpha Underground Trilogy bundle, Alpha Ascendant, and the Wolf Rampant Trilogy bundle.

What’s coming up in 2020?

I can definitely tell you I will write words! Not sure how many or in what form or when they’ll reach your ereaders/headphones. If you want up-to-the-minute release information, be sure to sign up for my email list. Have a great new year!

Falling into audio

As you may have noticed, this autumn has been all about audio. Since I posted last, the Alpha Underground Trilogy has been completed in audio — a great deal for Audible subscribers since you can snag three books for one credit! I’ve also approved the audio for Shadow Wolf and Alpha Ascendant, so those titles should be on or hitting your favorite retailers within the next few weeks.

Paranormal audio giveaway

Meanwhile, I’ve teamed up with a bunch of other paranormal authors to spread the audio love with a giveaway. Despite what the graphic above says, you have until November 21 to enter for a chance to win one of dozens of audiobooks.

What’s up next? There will be a box set version of the Wolf Rampant Trilogy coming down the pike in December, and the Moon Marked series will finish up in audio likely in January.

In the meantime, of course, I’ve been writing new books to hit your ereaders if you prefer not to listen. I’m really excited about Moon Stalked, the first chapters of which will show up here within the week. So watch this space!

Wolf’s Bane now in audio!

Wolf's Bane by Aimee Easterling audiobook

Amazonaudible

I am so excited to be able to share Piper Goodeve‘s amazing production of the Wolf’s Bane audiobook! She brought Mai’s world alive, and the listeners among you are bound to enjoy the result.

Want to give the audiobook a try? It’s available much wider than my other audiobooks. You should be able to find a library copy via Overdrive, Hoopla, or Cloudlibrary. You can start an Audible or Scribd free trial and nab a copy that way. Or you can buy on Nook, Kobo, Amazon (where the book is whispersynced), Apple, or Google.

You can even download a trial chapter from Bookfunnel if you’re not quite ready to take the plunge and want to sample on the go.

Happy listening!

Thirteenth Werewolf

Thirteenth WerewolfTwo months ago, the conversation in my head went like this:

Me: Well, that’s great! I nailed down all of the main characters for my new book…except for one. Luke, where are you?

Luke: Here.

Me: Yikes! What?

Luke: Um, you called me. But I can fade back into your subconscious if you want me to….

Me: No…? No, no, no, no! Stay right where you’re at. Maybe…tell me a little about yourself.

Luke: ….

Me: Luke?

Luke: ….

Me: Darn it! Right back where I started. I just can’t figure this guy out.

Luke: You really want to know about me? There was this one day at Wolf Camp when my cousin…

Me: Wolf Camp? Cousin? Those aren’t in the book I’m writing.

Luke: ….

Me: Oops, I mean, yeah, that sounds great. Tell me more.

Luke:

“Welcome to Wolf Camp. You have a 42% chance of survival. Please take your orientation packet and head directly to your cabin.”

The kid stood in the doorway like a deer in the headlights. Tattoos marbled his skin while a deflated army-surplus duffel bag hung over one shoulder. It took a second for Becca’s words to sink in. Then—predictably—he turned on his heel to flee the premises…and crashed chest first into me.

“Perhaps you could tone down the welcome,” I suggested to my cousin.

“Just saying it the way I see it, Luke.”

“Well, start seeing it differently.”

Despite our banter, my eyes never left the kid. I did, however, take a single step backwards so I could take in the entirety of his form.

He was early twenties, I guessed. Older than usual. And…. “Where’s Mommy?”

***

Intrigued? You can keep reading in my new anthology: Thirteenth Werewolf and Other Stories, which is free on Amazon today. It will be hitting other retailers at the end of November — I apologize for those of you who are being forced to wait.
